A Moment to Celebrate Community
On Monday 27th April, the Cirencester Community Awards brought together people, organisations and initiatives that quietly - and sometimes not so quietly, make a real difference to the town and its surrounding areas.
Launched three years ago, the awards were created to recognise the incredible work of charities, community organisations, not-for-profit groups and individuals who give their time, energy and care to support others. They shine a light on the kind of work that often happens behind the scenes but has a lasting impact.
This year marked an important shift.
For the first time, nominations were received for organisations that don’t sit neatly within the traditional “not-for-profit” category, but are still deeply rooted in community impact. The judging panel recognised that contribution doesn’t always come in one form - and that businesses can play a meaningful role in shaping stronger, more connected communities.
As a result, a special moment was created to acknowledge individuals whose work bridges that gap between enterprise and impact.
Among those recognised was Pinky Laing of Remnant Revolution, for her work rescuing surplus fabrics destined for landfill and giving them a second life through community sewing classes at the Old Department Store.
Also acknowledged was Marie Lewis of Wickes, who champions community initiatives by organising the distribution of donated products where they are needed most.
And Annie-Laurie Campbell of The Grace Network, whose vision of a “department store for the circular economy” has created a shared space for independent social enterprises to come together and serve the community in a meaningful way.
It was a powerful reminder that community impact can take many forms - and that collaboration between individuals, organisations and businesses is what truly brings a place to life.
We left feeling incredibly grateful to be part of a town that values connection, creativity and collective effort - and inspired by the people who continue to make Cirencester such a special place.
