Sustainability in Textiles: The Thoughtful Approach of Lewis & Wood

In an industry often characterised by mass production and fleeting trends, Lewis & Wood stands as a beacon of thoughtful, sustainable design. Founded by Stephen Lewis and Creative Director Magdalen Jebb, this fabric and wallpaper company has built its reputation on quality, individuality, and a steadfast commitment to British talent and manufacturing.

A Commitment to British Craftsmanship

From its humble beginnings in a London basement, Lewis & Wood has remained dedicated to sourcing and producing materials within the UK. Unlike many mainstream brands that churn out numerous new designs each year, they take a more selective approach—introducing only a handful of carefully curated patterns. Their philosophy is simple yet profound: produce only what they love.

On a cold February morning, I had the privilege of visiting their workshop in Stroud. Walking through the space, the sense of craftsmanship and dedication was palpable. Here, textile production isn't just about making fabric—it’s about preserving a tradition that values artistry over excess.

Lewis & Wood still work with the last remaining mills in the UK continue to produce high-quality linen and cotton to supply their raw materials.

The Power of Selective Design

In an era of overwhelming choice, Lewis & Wood offers a refreshing antidote. They deliberately limit their releases to about eight new patterns per year, ensuring that each design is deeply considered rather than just another addition to an over-saturated market. As Stephen Lewis himself put it, "Okay, what we have to do is we have to do things differently from other people. Otherwise, it all looks the same."

This ethos extends beyond their designs to the way they operate. Lewis & Wood chooses not to advertise aggressively or maintain multiple showrooms, yet their fabrics and wallpapers have a devoted following among decorators who appreciate their unique aesthetic. Their creations have been described as bold yet gentle, sophisticated yet eccentric, traditional yet innovative—each piece infused with a sense of individuality that sets them apart from mass-produced alternatives.

Sustainability Through Intentionality

Sustainability in textiles and interiors isn’t just about using eco-friendly materials; it’s also about rethinking consumption patterns. By focusing on fewer, high-quality products and keeping production local, Lewis & Wood naturally fosters a more sustainable approach. Their commitment to producing only what they love—rather than what market trends dictate—means less waste, longer-lasting designs, and a stronger connection between maker and consumer.

Lewis & Wood’s Modern Technology and Zero Waste Commitment

Lewis and Wood have optimised their print production to minimise waste. By using cutting edge printing technology, no ink dye waste enters the water system. Their commitment to zero waste processes demonstrates a modern fabric production house moving with the times.

As we navigate a world increasingly aware of the environmental impact of fast fashion and disposable design, brands like Lewis & Wood offer a model worth emulating. Their success isn’t built on quantity but on passion, craftsmanship, and an unwavering belief in doing things differently. And, as their loyal customers will attest, that difference is something truly special.

By embracing sustainability as a guiding principle rather than a mere trend, Lewis & Wood reminds us that the most beautiful creations are often those made with patience and care.

We have collaborated with Lewis & Wood on their remnant fabrics, using samples, cuttings and end of rolls to make a beautiful capsule collection of oven gloves, cushions, Full Frilled Aprons and Hot water bottle covers.
