Head Crafter Spotlight - Meet Marilene
We interviewed Marilene on her process of making a beautiful Full Frilled Apron. Marilene has been an integral part of the team since day one and her passion shows through in everything she does.
What does your mother mean to you?
My mother is everything to me, she is such a big reference as a woman and a mum, my dad died when I was 7 years old and my mum has been the mum and dad for me and for my 4 sisters, she is so strong and resilient.
How long have you been sewing for?
I remember seeing my mother sewing when I was a kid, especially after my dad passed, I started working very early as a nanny when I was 7 years old. Then I helped my mum with sewing. When I was a bit older I started a job as an intern at a company from my city. From there I worked a very long time, learning from making samples and cutting until I began sewing.
How do you balance motherhood and sewing?
This is the hardest part. I have an adult daughter that has her own place near my house, but I also have a 5 year old boy. I try my best to sew and do everything while he is at school, so I can have quality time with him when he is home. My oldest daughter is always around and is a great support when I need it with my youngest boy Noah. I love being a mother to my children. They teach me a lot.
How long does it takes to make a beautiful apron?
I don’t really count making one alone, I have procedures in place and I can make around 4/5 aprons a day depending on how much detail they have, the Frilled Aprons take longer to make.
What kind of music do you listen to while you are sewing?
I love music in general, all kinds! I have some favourites such as Coldplay, U2, Pink Floyd, and some Brazilian music that always makes me feel closer to home.
